The diamonds of the day
One of the things I love most in life,
is getting into bed at night
and drawing the curtains
that are behind our bed.
In the summer,
with the windows open;
I can hear the sounds of the city
settling into sleep.
A voice raised in laughter,
usually someone young
hanging on tightly to all the hopes
and dreams that belonged to the weekend.
A lone dog,
barking.
Cars,
getting quieter and less by the minute.
As I draw the curtains,
I look for the diamonds.
The diamonds of the day.
I think of all of those who will settle down
in a boxed city for this night,
with a piece of cardboard as their art.
Usually saying,
* homeless, hungry.*
Of those who will sit at an all night vigil at
the bedside of someone they love.
The insomniacs.
For whom,
sleep may never come.
Looking for the diamonds in the day
I feel a tender hand
reaching out to touch my face
and the whispered words
* I love you darling, goodnight*
falling gently on my cheek.
It's then I see those curtains.
To all that lies beyond.
( I've always had a soft spot for the music of John Rutter.
On todays song of the day, the last few bars of this piece make
me shiver. Every time. :)
( A special welcome here to Martin, who read my old blog
and always left sweet as pie comments. Hi Martin, it's good to have
you back. :)
